Filler dissolving and correction
Hyaluronidase (Hylenex)
Hyaluronidase is an enzyme that breaks down hyaluronic acid filler. Improvement often begins quickly, although the amount of time and number of treatments needed can vary depending on the product and area treated.
What it treats
Is this for you?
- Filler that has migrated above the lip line
- Overfilled lips or cheeks
- Puffiness or a bluish cast under the eyes
- Lumps, bumps and asymmetry
- Volume accumulated over years of treatment
- Urgent vascular complications after filler
How it works
What is actually happening.
Hyaluronidase breaks hyaluronic acid into smaller fragments that the body can clear. It is used for hyaluronic acid fillers, so identifying the product is an important first step; it does not dissolve products such as Radiesse, Sculptra, silicone or other permanent fillers.
Dr. Nawas dissolves conservatively and may treat in stages, then reassesses once the swelling has settled. This approach helps avoid removing more volume than necessary.
If you would like the area refilled afterward, that is done at a separate visit, usually two to four weeks later, once the tissue has recovered and the area can be assessed accurately.
Your visit
What the appointment is like.
Identify
Dr. Nawas examines the area and works out what was placed, where, and when. Bring records if you have them.
Dissolve
A small test dose if there is any history of allergy, then the enzyme is injected into the filler itself.
Reassess
The area is checked at two weeks. A second session is sometimes needed for old or dense filler.
Refill, if wanted
Conservative refilling in the right plane, two to four weeks later.
Before and after your appointment
Simple preparation, simple recovery.
Before
- Tell Dr. Nawas about any allergy to bee or wasp stings and any reaction to previous hyaluronidase treatment.
- Bring the name, amount and date of the filler if you know them.
- The area may look temporarily less full after dissolving as swelling settles and the tissue adjusts.
Afterward
- Swelling and mild bruising can occur for the first few days.
- The area may look less full or temporarily hollow after the filler is dissolved, especially if significant volume had been present.
- Hyaluronidase can temporarily affect some of the body's own hyaluronic acid in the treated area, but the body naturally replenishes it over time.

Good to know
Questions patients ask.
Will it dissolve my own tissue?
Hyaluronidase can temporarily affect some of your natural hyaluronic acid in the treated area, but your body continually replenishes it. Any temporary change in fullness generally improves as the tissue recovers.
Can it fix filler done years ago?
Often, yes. Hyaluronic acid filler can sometimes persist for years, and older or denser filler may require more than one dissolving session.
Is it painful?
You may feel a brief sting or burning sensation during injection. Numbing cream is used beforehand to make the treatment more comfortable.
Related procedures
Often planned together.
Next step
Ready when you are.
Filler that has migrated or overstayed its welcome, reversed carefully and in stages.
New to ZN Dermatology? Choose a consultation appointment: the product placed before must be identified first, because hyaluronidase only dissolves hyaluronic acid. Dissolving can usually begin at the same visit.
