How much does Botox cost in Houston?

By Dr. Zeena Nawas, MD, FAAD, FACMS Medically reviewed 7 min read

Botox is $16 per unit at ZN Dermatology: frown lines about 20 units ($320), the full upper face 40 to 64 units ($640 to $1,024). Lasts 3 to 4 months.

The short answer

Botox is $16 per unit at ZN Dermatology, and the total depends on how many units each area needs: frown lines are typically 20 units, or $320, and the full upper face is 40 to 64 units, or $640 to $1,024, every unit injected by Dr. Nawas.

Results appear in 3 to 7 days, are complete at two weeks and last about 3 to 4 months. Dysport and Daxxify are also on hand, and their units are not interchangeable with Botox units, which is why comparing clinics by the per-unit price alone can mislead.

How many units of Botox do you need?

Botox is dosed in units, and the FDA label gives the doses that were tested: 20 units across five injection points for the frown lines between the brows, 24 units for crow's feet (12 per side), and 20 units for horizontal forehead lines, which the label approves only together with the frown lines, for 40 units in all. In October 2024 the label added vertical neck bands at 26 to 36 units. Those are trial doses; the number you need depends on how strong your muscles are and how much movement you want to keep. A man with heavy brow muscles may need more than the label dose for the same effect, and a first-time patient who wants a soft result may need less.

Here is what the common areas come to at $16 per unit. Dr. Nawas sets your dose at the appointment, after watching you frown, raise your brows and smile, and you pay only for the units used.

AreaTypical unitsAt $16 per unit
Frown lines (between the brows)20$320
Crow's feet (both sides)24$384
Forehead lines, treated with the frown lines40 in all$640
Full upper face (frown, forehead, crow's feet)40 to 64$640 to $1,024
Vertical neck bands26 to 36$416 to $576
Jaw clenching and slimming (masseter, off-label)40 to 60$640 to $960

Unit counts are typical ranges from the FDA label and published practice; yours are set at the appointment. Masseter treatment is off-label.

What does Botox cost per unit versus per area?

Houston clinics price Botox two ways. Per-unit pricing, which ZN Dermatology uses, charges for exactly what is injected. Per-area pricing bundles an unstated number of units into a flat fee, which is simple but hides the dose, and a low flat fee usually means a low dose and a shorter result. The American Society of Plastic Surgeons put the national average physician fee for a botulinum toxin treatment at $435 in 2023, a figure that mixes single-area and multi-area visits and includes no facility cost, so it is a reference point rather than a quote.

There is one more reason per-unit comparisons across clinics mislead: the three products are measured in different units. Dysport's labeled frown-line dose is 50 units to Botox's 20, and the Dysport label states plainly that its units are not interchangeable with other botulinum toxins. A clinic quoting a low per-unit price may be quoting Dysport units. Ask which product, and how many units, before comparing.

At ZN Dermatology the price is $16 per unit for Botox and Dysport alike, most visits come to $500 to $1,400 depending on the areas treated, and new patients book a $250 consultation at which treatment can usually be done the same day. Cosmetic care is self-pay. How long does Botox last?

About 3 to 4 months for most people, and the label's own trial data show why that is an average rather than a promise. In the frown-line studies, 80% of patients were rated responders at day 30 and 25% at day 120. The effect does not switch off; it fades, and most patients notice movement returning in the third month. The Dysport label says its effect may last up to four months, with similar fading in its trials.

Daxxify is the outlier. In Revance's phase 3 program of more than 2,700 patients, the median duration was six months, and some patients held their result to nine. That is manufacturer-reported data, and the labeled frown-line dose is 40 units rather than 20, so the per-unit price is not comparable either. Dr. Nawas carries all three, and the choice usually comes down to how long you want to go between visits and how you responded before.

Two timing rules apply whatever the product. The label notes that dosing more often than every three months has not been studied, so a touch-up is done at the two-week check rather than by returning early. And results are judged at day 14, not day 5: nothing happens for the first three days.

Is Botox the same thing as botulism?

"Is Botox botulism" has become a common Houston search, so here is the plain answer. Botox is a purified form of the toxin that botulism bacteria make, measured in units and injected in small doses into specific muscles. It contains no live bacteria, so it cannot cause an infection, and the doses used for the face are far smaller than those used for muscle disorders. The FDA label carries a boxed warning that the effect of any botulinum toxin can spread from the injection site, with swallowing and breathing difficulty reported, and those reports come overwhelmingly from much higher doses used for conditions such as spasticity. In the cosmetic trials the common side effects were eyelid drooping in 3% of frown-line patients, and headache in 9% and brow drooping in 2% when the forehead was treated. Precise placement by someone who knows the anatomy is what keeps those numbers low.

What does a Botox visit at ZN Dermatology involve?

Dr. Nawas performs every injection herself; there is no nurse injector. She watches you frown, raise your brows and smile, marks each point and tells you the dose in units before anything is opened. A very fine needle delivers 8 to 20 small injections over about five minutes, each a quick pinch. Small bumps fade within 20 to 30 minutes, and most patients go straight back to work. Stay upright for four hours, skip exercise and saunas for 24 hours, and judge the result at two weeks, when she checks it and makes any small adjustment.

To reduce bruising, avoid ibuprofen, fish oil and vitamin E for 5 to 7 days beforehand, but do not stop aspirin or any prescribed medication. Tell her if you are pregnant or breastfeeding, have a neuromuscular condition, or have reacted to a neurotoxin before. ZN Dermatology is at 2121 Sage Road, Suite 305, Houston, TX 77056, in the Galleria area, with free parking in front of the building. Hours are Monday to Friday, 10 am to 5 pm, and you can book online or call (346) 696-3376.

When to see a dermatologist.

  • Lines you can see at rest, not only when you frown: those may need filler or resurfacing as well, and a dermatologist can tell you which.
  • A heavy brow or hooded eyelids, where forehead Botox placed without care can drop the brow further.
  • A neuromuscular condition, a prior reaction to a neurotoxin, or pregnancy or breastfeeding, each of which changes the answer.
  • Any drooping, swallowing or breathing change after an injection anywhere, which needs a same-day call.
